Born Joseph Henry Burnett on January 14, 1948, in St. Louis Missouri, he started in music as a drummer for the Legendary Stardust Cowboy’s novelty hit, “Paralyzed.” He later joined Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue on tour as a guitarist and formed The Alpha Band with two other members of Dylan’s band.
As a producer, he has worked with Roy Orbison, Lisa Marie Presley, Los Lobos, Elton John & Leon Russell, Elvis Costello, Natalie Merchant, The Wallflowers, Tony Bennett, and k.d. lang on the A Wonderful World album. He won a Grammy and an Academy award for his work on the soundtrack for Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou? and the single The Weary Kid.
Burnett also has musical roles in movies like The Big Lebowski and Walk the Line.
