He holds American nationality and his ethnicity is White. His parents are Anna (mother) and Rony Burghoff (father). His mother was a local theatre dancer, choreographer, poet, scriptwriter, theatre play director, and songwriter while his father was an employee of a clock company.

He has an older brother who is six years older than him identified as David and they both grew up in a Victorian house in Forestville.

Gary Burghoff began his career in 1967 in an Off-Broadway production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. In 1968 he joined The Relatives Band as a drummer and later formed a Jazz band known as The We Three.

However, he stopped his drumming profession after landing a role in the CBS MASH film in 1970 which later became a series and eventually he earned six Emmy Awards nominations for his role in the series and then won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a comedy series in 1977.

After leaving the MASH show he made an appearance in several game shows like Showoffs, Match Game, and Liar’s Club. He also played in several other films like B.S I Love You, Daniel’s Lot, Twigs, The Man in the Santa Claus Suit, NET Playhouse, The Good Guys, and others.
