In 1972, he joined Xerox’s Palo Alto Research Center.

“Xerox PARC was a magical place,” Charles said in a presentation at Carnegie Mellon University in 2011.

He added: “The reason Xerox PARC existed was that Peter McColough, the chairman of the board, and David Kearns, the president of Xerox, had an incredibly successful company, but it only had one product, the copier, and they knew instinctively as anyone knows in business you can’t be a single product company and survive forever you’ve got to diversify.”

In 1978, Geschke helped establish and manage PARC’s Imaging Sciences Laboratory.
