It’s a castle built out of love, a true fairy tale unlike anything you’ve ever seen.
Havencrest Castle is hidden behind the trees in Savanna, Illinois.
In 1976, artist Alan St. George and his wife, Adrianne, bought the 23-room mansion originally built in 1901.
They immediately got to work creating an extraordinary home that would tell their unique love story.
For 30 years, Alan, the artist, and Adrianne, the visionary, worked together designing and building what would become a 63-room castle.
They loved entertaining guests and filling their home with laughter, but in 2006 the castle would go dark.
Adrianne was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and died two days later.
For years, Alan kept to himself, mourning the loss of the woman he met when he was just 13 years old.
As time passed, Alan decided he was ready to let light and laughter back into their home.
He opened the castle for limited public tours on weekends in October of 2018.
“Now the lights were all on, the music was on and people were laughing and smiling,” said Alan.
“I know Adrianne was happy with that because that’s what she loved.”
Havencrest Castle will be open again for public tours during weekends this May.
They run Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm.
